I’ve just installed Debian 7 (Wheezy) on my “Brand New” Dell Inspiron 14R 5420 and as expected not everything worked right out of the box. But let’s be honest, nothing ever does. As I’ll be using the notebook and finding more issues (and hopefully finding the solutions) will be posting them here and my experiencies. Hope to be useful to somebody.

Right out of the box ethernet worked just fine (thank god), but unfortunately wi-fi didn’t. But the solutions it’s quite easy, it requires non-free drivers. So first of all add non-free to your apt sources file and make an update. After that:

sudo apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi
sudo modprobe iwlwifi

That should get it going

Of course touch pad does work right the way but with limited (if none) features. When trying FN+F3 (which should toggle on/off touchpad) it had no effect whatsoever in it. Also there was no scroll available, neither side-scroll nor two-finger.

The issue relies on that Debian does not recognize the touchpad as such, but as a PS/2 Mouse, you can check by

cat /proc/bus/input/devices

If there is no touchpad, and you dont have any ps/2 mouse installed, this is probably your same case.
The solutions is a little bit more complicated but if I could, you can also. Before anything we will need the linux headers:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

Once we got that, we download the drivers and install them with the Dynamic Kernel Module Support

#First lets make sure we do have dmks
sudo apt-get install dkms

Then download the latest driver from here (Its Nov 5 2013 and its version is 1.3)

tar -xf psmouse-alps-1.3-alt.tbz
cp -R usr/src/psmouse-alps-1.3 /usr/src/psmouse-alps-1.3
sudo dkms add psmouse/alps-1.3
sudo dmks autoinstall
sudo rmmod psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse

Once we have this done, we should be able to toggle the touchpad with the FN key; also we now should see a touchpad tab in our system’s mouse settings. There we can enable/disable touchpad click, set the scroll, etc.
